Pay parity is the HR term often used among the compensation & Benefit experts (Those strategic HR guys in charge of total rewards and payroll system in many organisations)
Pay parity typically means that your staff must be paid a fairly competitive reward for their efforts at work, most especially if they are within the same evaluated job class / grade. Evaluating a job, means we do analysis of the intrinsic value of a job and pay for that value. For example, in a job with high-level of hazard and propensity for hazard, what this means is that such jobs should earn more in value. Let us take for instance within the oil and gas, the real reasons why most rig/onshore workers earn more salary than the office support staff is not because of educational qualification, it is often because their job is evaluated to have some hazards , hence the need for high wage rate (other things being equal)..
The public sector as we know it, sees the police & the politicians -elected / selected politicians as public servants. Hence, by HR standards there should be some comparative pay parity among them.
Yes I mean Honorables, senators, governors, and of course the presidency should earn seemingly comparable wage with the members of our force including the police. This is because the police are more exposed to risk Factors, Assessing their job from professional HR viewpoints has high evaluated points compared to any members of the national assemblies ( for instance) whose job has less exposure to risk factors unlike the military and paramilitary forces who face different level of security challenges, domestic and foreign threats.
When this disparity occurs in a corporate organization, aside high attrition rate, what organization gets include disengaged , discouraged staff , high level of pilfering, stealing and moonlighting (having secret job aside one’s regular employment ) this will of course result into low morale and low productivity in the original job.
It is so glaring that we have gotten it wrong within the Nigerian public sector in Nigeria, hence the reason we keep robbing peter to pay Paul. While this article isn’t meant to support any form of corruption to earn a living, the fact still remains that police extortion and high handedness is a reaction to social neglect of our servicemen. The end result of this neglect is a future disaster for everyone including the politician.
The solution and way forward:
At the moment, the Nigeria economy is already affected through a volatile FX exchange. When issues like this happens in an organization, HR would carry out a people re- engineering and employee engagement survey to ascertain where to begin. But due to the fact that the issue at hand has a macro national implication, Nigerian youths have made the decisions easier for any government that wants a genuine change and from inference here is what we must do;

But due to the fact that the issue at hand has a macro national implication, Nigerian youths have made the decisions easier for any government that wants a genuine change and from inference here is what we must do;
- Re-strategize your recruitment process and hire people of sound mind. Brain examination is key at this stage. ( let our psychologist earn something too )
- Improve your reward system to start, at least let no military and para military earn anything less than N100,000 Monthly.
- End the exorbitant wage bills of politicians. This will not only save the country, it will reduce people’s interest in politics hereby making the real people with the right soul for service come in to serve.
- Carry out some cleansing through effective restitution. Thanks to few governors who are already taking steps, Lagos , Kwara, Anambra, good job !
- Amend the constitution. : The fact is that, an organization is as healthy as its HR policies, so also a country is as healthy as its constitution and laws. Nigeria has no reason to have just a state/regional territorial police force. Decentralizing police force will be a game changer.
Finally movement has transient from mere agitation for police reform, it is now a metaphor for everything called governance in Nigeria. The youths have demonstrated the signs of things to come. Nigeria is truly rising again through her vibrant and indefatigable youths. These guys have changed the narrative, “No lazy youth has the energy to sustain a protest this long”
